Opera House Lighting

The Helsinki Opera House is home to the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. It is a nationally significant building, opened in 1993 as the first opera house in Finland.

In honor of the Finland 100 jubilee year, the lighting of the Opera House emphasized elegance and adaptability, which was also praised by the design competition jury. The lighting aims to convey the Opera House’s cultural significance and importance as a national institution, and to enliven the cityscape, especially during the darkest months.

The Opera’s vibrancy and activity are communicated through three distinct lighting themes: architectural, seasonal, and festive. The architectural theme is displayed when there is no performance or event in the building, and it comprises three shades of white that emphasize the building’s architecture. Contrast was introduced to the existing warm interior lighting with cooler exterior lighting and a bright, projected Opera logo. The seasonal theme fades when a performance begins, thereby communicating the activity within the building and highlighting the Opera’s active role in the capital’s cultural life. These lighting themes follow the Opera’s recurring seasons: vibrant cyan in spring and warm yellow in autumn. The festive theme (dark lavender) is active during the holiday season around Christmas and New Year, when classical performances draw entire families to enjoy both the shows and the brightly illuminated venue.
