Light Murals in the Virontörmä Residential Area
This project involves the artistic and environmental lighting of a large residential area in Virontörmä, West Tampere. A key aspect of the project was a collaborative approach, which incorporated the perspectives of the residents into the design process. A workshop was organized for residents, and children from the local daycare also participated in brainstorming by drawing and painting. The lighting designers created the visual concepts based on the material developed in the workshops. These light murals, projected onto the gables of apartment buildings, convey the community spirit and local identity of the residents.

In addition to the light murals, the lighting in the courtyards and playgrounds creates atmosphere and comfort in the inner courtyards of the residential area. In the courtyard areas, light was brought to a human scale by integrating lighting into structures and adding accent lighting. With its playfulness, the Virontörmä residential area challenges the more traditional model of restrained and functional urban lighting.
