Senaatintori Helsinki master plan

The master plan 2014 defined guidelines for the area’s dark time look. The area has been examined in its historical context and the monuments and their role and also the significance of tourism has been considered. The visual look and identity of the square is remarkable for Helsinki and the whole Finland as a tourist attraction. Different stakeholders have been interviewed and many conversations have been gone through so that the design could take in to account as many opinions as possible.

Finally, the plan defines the lighting objectives, principles and lighting styles. Main focus has been to formulate an easily understandable dark hour space, the understandability of the place created by the architecture and the hierarchical meaning in the cityscape with modern lighting styles.

“We wanted to focus on lighting the buildings surrounding the square, not the actual market area. In this we can see the lighting trend of our times. For example in Europe they have given up lighting only areas. Instead with light the environment is brought out and when looked at it creates an impression for the viewer to be ‘in an illuminated space’”, Marko Kuusisto, project manager.

“The target of the new lighting is to bring out the monumental buildings with dignity without giving a role to the light itself. The light must serve the entirety. It should only highlight the shapes of the buildings with restraint and create a serene entiry of the square with it’s buildings”, Roope Siiroinen, main designer.

The Design Process

  • 01
    CONCEPT

First, we find out the basis, requirements, and objectives of each project. The goal is to find a scheme, which caters to the needs of the client and where the visual image, atmosphere, image, safety, flexibility and adaptability, technical feasibility and the cost structure are taken into consideration. The analysis creates a concept: a view of what kind of lighting is best for the feature.

  • 02
    IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

Based on a concept approved by the client, we draw up a solid implementation plan for the initial data of electrical design or as a project plan.

  • 03
    IMPLEMENTATION AND INTRODUCTION

We act as a consultant to the client in all stages of the process. We ensure that plans materialize accordingly. When necessary, the project is supplied as a turnkey product.
